Project description:
This reinforced concrete block of apartments was constructed in Stovolos, Nicosia. The building consists of pilotis, which is utilized as parking and storage area and six upper stories comprising residential flats. A coupled wall structural system was defined along the two principal, horizontal directions, so as to control the horizontal displacements of the building. The utilization of wide, shallow, inverted beams interconnecting the vertical structural elements, for the attainment of the architecturally defined flat ceilings, was considered as superior to the traditional flat slab system, in terms of stiffness, displacements, ductility and second order phenomena sensitivity. Furthermore, bored, cast in-situ, concrete piles were implemented in order to secure the transfer of foundation loads to lower soil layers of sufficient strength, instead of their direct distribution on the moderate strength surface soil.
