House in Galata
Size: 120 m²
Project description:
This adobe masonry house is situated in Galata, in the highlands of Nicosia, required rehabilitation and renovation. The existing masonry walls were coated with gypsum mortar, which was deteriorated due to the weathering effects and its removal was compulsory. The adobe bricks were reconditioned and the walls were tied with solid wood elements at the points of unfavorable separation. The majority of the roof’s timber structural members were in a satisfactory condition, so they were retained and subjected to proper maintenance, since they constitute an integral component of the architectural character of the building. Also, the revised interior configuration enforced the insertion of some partition walls, while the desire for adequate natural lighting and ventilation imposed the formation of few additional openings on the exterior walls.
